Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crust or puff pastry
  • 1 egg beaten for egg wash

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the chopped onion until soft.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  5. Stir in salt, black pepper, paprika, thyme, and tomato paste.
  6. Pour in beef broth and simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes until slightly thick.
  7. Remove the filling from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  8. Roll out pie crust or puff pastry and cut into circles about 4–5 inches wide.
  9. Place a spoonful of beef filling in the center of each circle.
  10. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and seal the edges with a fork.
  11. Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  12. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the pies are golden brown and crispy.
  13. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Let the beef filling cool slightly before adding it to the dough to prevent soggy pastry.
Do not overfill the pies or they may burst open while baking.
Puff pastry will create a flakier texture, while pie crust gives a classic homemade taste.
You can add shredded cheese to the filling for extra flavor.
These hand pies can be frozen and reheated later for quick meals.
