Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef
  • 3 large onions thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs optional
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Caramelize onions in butter and olive oil until golden brown.
  3. Brown ground beef in a skillet, season with salt and pepper.
  4. Add garlic and thyme, cook 1–2 minutes.
  5. Stir in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, simmer 3–5 minutes.
  6. In a baking dish, layer beef mixture, onions, and half the cheese.
  7. Top with remaining cheese and breadcrumbs.
  8. Bake 20–25 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
