Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain basmati rice
  • 2 cups water or broth
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 small onion finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 –3 whole cardamom pods
  • 1 small cinnamon stick optional
  • A pinch of cloves optional
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish optional

Method

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until water runs clear.
  2. Heat butter or oil in a pot, sauté onions, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Add rice and stir for 1 minute to coat in butter and spices.
  4. Pour in water or broth, add salt, and bring to a boil.
  5. Lower heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Turn off heat and let the rice rest covered for 5–10 minutes.
  7. Fluff rice with a fork and garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

  • Rinse rice to avoid clumping.
  • Don’t lift the lid while simmering to keep the steam trapped.
  • Butter or oil adds richness but can be swapped for coconut or olive oil.
  • Optional spices elevate flavor but can be skipped if desired.
  • Pairs well with curry, stir-fry, or grilled vegetables.
